What happens when those documenting atrocities are silenced, while the narratives used to justify them go unquestioned?
In her latest report, Truth Under the Rubble: Media in the Time of Genocide, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese asks us to confront not only the physical targeting of those documenting the genocide in Gaza, but also the media patterns that normalize Palestinian suffering, obscure responsibility, and reproduce dominant power structures.
“Mediacide,” as she describes it, is about more than Israel's mass killing of journalists. It is also about shaping the narratives through which Israeli violence is justified or erased. The struggle is over both who gets to tell the story and which stories are deemed credible and worth telling.
In this clip, MIC contributor Samira Mohyeddin speaks with Albanese about the consequences of unverified claims and misinformation—and the responsibility of news organizations to scrutinize the narratives they amplify.
